Review

his is the type of book if you are in the mood for an easy read. A book that is so cheesy and predictable you want to facepalm and eye roll numerous times.

I'm not completely saying this book is terrible, at the time I wasn't looking for a book that was well written or in depth.

So that is a warning if you are thinking about reading this book.

Before I continue I should bring up the controversial "ghost reader".

I believe the main reason why everyone was upset about this was not because she got a ghost reader to write her book, many "famous" people have done that. It was more of the fact that she didn't mention it either in one of her YouTube videos or in her book.

I'm not personally insulted because I frankly don't care. Of course she had help writing her book. In all honesty I don't think her ghost writer is a good writer anyway. She obviously doesn't know how to write in the person of a teenager girl or boy, a parent and even a grandmother. She wasn't very good at making the characters sound different no matter what age r gender they were. It was basically monotone.

Now the reason why I'm giving this two stars and not the one it truly deserves, is because of the mood I was in.

All I felt like reading was a cheesy love story, something I didn't need to use my brain. Girl Online accomplished that for me.

What scares me is I already bought book two and I plan to read it.

I have nothing else to say about this, actually I do but there isn't any point. I could go on for days complaining about all the mistakes this book had, from the way Noah talks, how Penny's parents behave, her stereo-typical guy best friend, the mean girls at her school.....Okay I'm stopping myself right there before I get myself into a real rant.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

Daughter of Smoke and Bone (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #1) - Laini Taylor

Synopsis

"Errand requiring immediate attention. Come.

The note was on vellum, pierced by the talons of the almost-crow that delivered it. Karou read the message. 'He never says please', she sighed, but she gathered up her things.
When Brimstone called, she always came."

In general, Karou has managed to keep her two lives in balance. On the one hand, she's a seventeen-year-old art student in Prague; on the other, errand-girl to a monstrous creature who is the closest thing she has to family. Raised half in our world, half in 'Elsewhere', she has never understood Brimstone's dark work - buying teeth from hunters and murderers - nor how she came into his keeping. She is a secret even to herself, plagued by the sensation that she isn't whole.

Now the doors to Elsewhere are closing, and Karou must choose between the safety of her human life and the dangers of a war-ravaged world that may hold the answers she has always sought.

Review

This is the second time I've read Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor, the reason why I'm reading it again is because I finally got the next book in the trilogy, and because it has been a long time since I've read it, I needed to refresh my memory.

Lucky I did because there was a few things that I had forgotten.

I still loved the book the second time around. The characters and just the basic concept of the book is what kept me reading.

I wouldn't say this was my favourite book of all time, but I didn't hate it.

The reason why I love it so much is to do with our female protagonist, Karou. She isn't overly bad-ass acting like the hero of the story, but she also isn't weak. She's that in between genuine believable character.

What really sold me was her hair. I have been dying my hair for as long as I can remember and the colours have ranged considerably. So when I read she has blue hair, I instantly jealous. I want to pull off peacock blue hair.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone is a very interesting story, a young woman living two lives, one as a normal human going to school, hanging out with friends, dealing with boys. Then you have her other side, her only family are strange creatures.

Because it has been a long time since I've read this book, I completely forgot about the romance of this story. I don't know what it is lately, but nearly every book I've picked up so far is about two star-crossed lovers.

In this story you have Karou who is with the "demons", and then Akiva (the male main character), who is with the "angels".

So like all star-crossed love books, there is war against the "demons" and the "angels" who hate each other with a passion. And because of this, our main characters can not be together, but of course they do whatever it takes to do otherwise.

Can not wait to finally read book two in this trilogy, and see where Karou takes us.

Saga Vol.1 by Brian K. Vaughan

Saga, Volume 1 - Brian K. Vaughan, Fiona Staples

ew

Wow, just WOW!!

This is my first graphic novel that I've read, and this definitely won't be my last.

The story, the artwork, everything about this has got me completely hooked.

I love the two main characters, Alana and Marko, who are in love even though they are from different planets at war against each other.

Both on the run for their lives with their newborn baby. And as someone who had a baby not that long ago, there was a few funny moments that I could relate to. (Of course not the part where someone is trying to kill me).

This is definitely not a book for young people. The language and graphics of this book is definitely meant for mature audiences.  Basically anyone who isn't offended in seeing a graphic drawing of male and female parts.

What won this for me overall was the comedy, especially between Alana and Marko. I had a few laugh out loud moments where I got strange stares from people, but oh well.

I can not wait to pick up the next volume, because that ending....seriously. I've read books with cliffhangers before, but I think this tops it off.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

A Court of Thorns and Roses - Sarah J. Maas

Synopsis

Feyre’s survival rests upon her ability to hunt and kill – the forest where she lives is a cold, bleak place in the long winter months. So when she spots a deer in the forest being pursued by a wolf, she cannot resist fighting it for the flesh. But to do so, she must kill the predator and killing something so precious comes at a price.

Dragged to a magical kingdom for the murder of a faerie, Feyre discovers that her captor, his face obscured by a jewelled mask, is hiding far more than his piercing green eyes would suggest. Feyre’s presence at the court is closely guarded, and as she begins to learn why, her feelings for him turn from hostility to passion and the faerie lands become an even more dangerous place. Feyre must fight to break an ancient curse, or she will lose him forever.

Review

What can I say, considering I'm not a major fan of Sarah J. Maas' Throne of Glass series (okay I've only read two books of the series so far), I thorouhly enjoyed A Court of Thorns and Roses, first book in a whole new series.

There can be many reasons as to why this is the case. It could be I was just in the mood for a story like this one. A re-telling of a fairy-tale, Beauty and the Beast.

Another reason could be that unlike the Throne of Glass series that is young adult, this one is new adult. Which means the author is a bit mre free in the content and doesn't skim past the sex scenes.

I loved every character in this book, every one of them, including the 'bad guy' was well writen. You got to understand where they all came from and the reasons why they did the things they did.

My favourite character would have to be Lucien. There is just something about a character who is so care-free, that you can't help but feel intrigued by.

The only down fall I have with ALL the characters is their names. Like seriously, Sarah J. Maas couldn't come up with simple easy to say names? I was getting to a point that I either skimmed over their name, not bothering to try and pronounce it. Or just simply changing it to something normal.

For example, our female protaginist is Feyre....like seriously. I know at the back is a glossary on how to pronounce all the characters names, but I was still struggling with it.

I know this is a common this for Sarah. J Maas as I've read Throne of Glass, and there are odd names in their too.

The world this is set in is a mixture of magical and scary. Humans living isolated from the murderous fairies. Only seperating them is a five hundred year old peace treaty between the two.

Even though there was a map (I usually find them helpful when an author is trying to explain the world they are creating), I found it easy to understand and immerse myself in this ancient world. Sarah J. Maas slowly and at a great pace introduced you to new creatures and the world around Feyre.

So now the wait begins for book two in the series, which is released in May. And from what I've heard, which I hope isn't true, that the next book in the series is going to give us a love triangle. In my opinion I don't think this needs it. You will see why once you've read it.

Actually I think Sarah J. Maas could of finished with this book as it ended without a real cliffhanger. But then again I'm really enjoying this world, so it will be a shame to leave.

Review

This is actually the third time I've read Naked In Death. The first time was in 2011 and I just had my first born son. Since at the time it was hard for me to read hard copy books I was mainly reading from ebooks. Unfortunately I didn't continue the series, and to my bafflement I'm not 100% sure why not.

It wasn't until 2013 when I decided to start again and continue with the series. I only read up to book nine (there are at least over 30 books in the series). Again, why I didn't continue is still a mystery.

So now we are in 2015 and I've decided once again to start from the beginning and work my way through the series. This time I will be continuing on. Also coincidence that I have a new baby?

Even though this was my third time reading Naked In Death so I knew what was going to happen, I basically knew who the killer was, I still found myself unable to put this down. I had to know what was going to happen next even though I knew what it was. There is just something about J.D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts) that you are instantly trapped in her books no matter how many times you read it.

Eve Dallas is a strong independent woman, which was the first thing I loved about her. She spoke her mind and wasn't taking any bullshit from anyone.

What intrigued me most about her was her battle with her past. If you haven't read this series then I'm not going to tell you what that was, it's a big twist in the life of Eve Dallas.

As a mother when I first read this about Eve I only had a boy so it didn't hit too close to home. But now that I have a girl I felt extremely emotional. No child for that matter should have to experience what Eve did.

If you have read any Nora Roberts books you would know her strong points, and they are romance, friendship and family. She just knows what to write when it comes to this that when you're reading it, you can't help but feel warm inside. Okay I know that sounds a bit strange, but have you ever read a beautiful book that just makes you smile out of nowhere just thinking about it? Well Nora Roberts always has that effect with me.

Even though she adds a bit of darkness to her novels, there is always a bright sunshine at the end of the tunnel.

Naked In Death is a great crime/mystery novel mainly in the point of view of lieutenant Eve Dallas, so you are with her completely while she tries to solve a murder. And just like all great crime novels, you will be shocked to find out who did it. I know I was.

Can not wait to read the next book in the series, so stay tuned for another book review soon.

Review

I don't hate this book but I also didn't love it, and I can't put my finger on why this is.

I found it refreshing to read something in the point of view of a sex addict, lets face it, Dixon is a sex addict. And even though he seems to be enjoying himself, there is that sadness and uncertantiy in him, that self hate he has after he sleeps with a random woman.

You begin to feel sorry for him in a way because you understand why he has become this person. His so called "love of his life" cheats on him with his best friend. Enough said really.

When I first started reading Addicted To Sin I was surprised and shocked. For the life of me I did not expect a book to just jump right in there. You also get to see that Dixon doesn't really care what type of woman he gets aroused for, he's a sex addict, anything female would do for him.

Even though I felt sorry for Dixon in a way, I didn't like him over much. Okay yes he is addicted to sex, but he just keeps letting his dick do all the thinking for him. C'mon Dixon, it's not hard to decide which girl to pick.

So why three stars if I didn't love it....well I love Monica James' writing. Her story telling and characters I enjoyed the most. And because of that I would definitely pick up more of her books.

Review

The original Swedish title of this book is Men Who Hate Women. That's basically the book summed up in four words. It suits this story much better than the catchier The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, because it is in fact about men doing all kinds of horrid things to women. So here is the first warning to you, if you can't handle violence against women and children well, skip this novel.

Normally I'm a person who reads the book before watching the movie adaption. But there does come a time when that isn't so, and this is one of them. Actually to be honest, before I saw the movie I did attempt to read the book but I put it down after reading the first chapter. I couldn't understand what was going on because they kept on telling you about the present then all of a sudden talking about a past event.

Watching the movie and getting a good idea on what was going on, actually helped me begin the book again.

So on that note, even though I knew the layout, I still was on the edge of my seat wondering what will happen to these characters.

I would also be giving you guys a review on the 2011 film adaptation, which stars Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara.

It's hard to give a short synopsis of the book, as it's long and detailed in every aspect. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo starts off as an investigation of a 40-year old disappearance of a teenage heiress, but gradually morphs into a tale of serial murder and corporate trickery spanning several continents and later takes in complicated international financial fraud and the buried evil past of a wealthy Swedish industrial family.

Actually just read the blurb, that gives you a better understanding then my miserable attempt.

I found this book extremely engaging and full of action, there rarely was a dull moment. I also enjoyed the immense details about everything, from corporate crime to a twisted Swedish family. A nail biting read that never stopped even when the murderer was identified.

The only problem I had with this book was the writing style. Not sure if it's because of the translation, but I found it a bit poor. I can't think of the right word for it, it was basically not a well written book even though I really loved the story. And because I can't read the book in it's original language, I don't know if it's the same or translation.

Throughout the book, which is in four parts, you get a little statistic knowledge of Sweden's violence against women. I found this disgusting and miserable. I don't think Stieg Larsson was on the board of tourism when he wrote this, because it didn't make me want to get on a plane and fly to Sweden.

Here are the four statistics dated in approx 2003:

1. 18% of the women in Sweden have at one time been threatened by a man

2. 46% of women in Sweden have been subjected to violence by a man

3. 13% of the women in Sweden have been subjected to aggravated sexual assault outside of a sexual relationship

4. 92% of women in Sweden who have been subjected to sexual assault have not reported the most recent violent incident to the police

I shouldn't be pointing the finger at Sweden and making assumptions because to be honest, in my opinion, I think those facts apply to the rest of the world.

This however didn't spoil my reading experience. I am eager to start reading The Girl Who Played with Fire and see what Mikael and Lisbeth are up to next. Hopefully, no more rapes and violence against women (and men too).

Crossings by Ashley Capes

Crossings - Ashley Capes

Synopsis

In the Australian bush, wildlife ranger Lisa Thomas must uncover the truth behind a giant white kangaroo and the strange deaths connected to it, while dealing with the return of her abusive ex, Ben, whose rage is quickly growing out of control.

Review

When Ashley Capes asked if I wanted to read another one of his books, I jumped at the chance. It's been a year since I've started reading his books, and to say that I'm obsessed with his work is a understatement.

Crossings is a story of a wildlife ranger, Lisa Thomas, and her journey to uncover the mysterious killings of wildlife animals right at her door step. And to top if off, a strange giant white kangaroo that she isn't sure if it's real or not.

Lisa deals with a lot of serious issues, from the return of her abusive ex, to her father suffering from amnesia. Nothing seems to be going smoothly for her, but instead of backing down in a corner she continues to fight on.

I enjoyed reading Ashley Capes take on these topics, not a lot of authors can do this and be good at it.

The great thing about Ashley Capes story telling is  even though it has a fantasy element to it, it doesn't feel like it. It's not over the top or in your face. By doing this it becomes more realistic.

There are so many things thar I love about this book, but knowing me whatever I say I'm just going to be spoiling it for you. So do yourself a favour and pick this book up, you will not be dissapointed.

Crossings is dark, creepy and brilliant. Can not wait to read more of Ashley Capes.

CHANGES

I'm the type of person that changes their mind as much as they change their underwear...quite frequently. I'm also the type of person that every time there is something new in my life, I seem to change my whole way of thinking.

I've been blogging for a long time now, but I have not stuck with a blog name for long. Why, well I just got bored with it or I realise it doesn't suit me.

I'm just trying to find something that would stick, find something that is me 100%. So everything I do is a try and error.

So without further ado, my new blog is called Witch + Cat.

I've also decided to start a whole new blog which I will discuss a whole range of things from books to parenting and everything else in between.

So all my blog posts will be at:

witchpluscat.blogspot.com

On that blog site I will leave links to this site, as I prefer to post my reviews on here.

If anything what I just said doesn't make sence, please leave a comment below and I'll be happy to answer.

I hope you check out my new blog :)

Where Have I Been??

Hello World!! It feels like it has been years since I last posted, but I do have a very good explanation....I had a baby girl.

She was born on August 30th - five days late, but as the saying goes, "better late then never".

So reading and posting reviews have been put on hold. But don't despair, as soon as I get settled in with a new born girl and a four year old boy, I'll be reading and posting non-stop.

Until next time :)

Reading progress update: I've read 365 out of 690 pages.

A Discovery Of Witches (All Souls, #1) - Deborah Harkness

I'm putting this book on hold....

It's not that I don't like it, it's just I want to read another book.

I've had this urge (odd terminology) to marathon read the Millennium trilogy by Stieg Larsson, and knowing me, I know for sure I won't enjoy A Discover Of Witches as much as I want to because all I'm thinking about is starting another book.

So to save the stress and my impatience, I'll put A Discovery Of Witches aside for now and start reading The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson

So I went shopping today....and when I saw Target (Australia) was selling the complete Millennium Trilogy in the new edition, I had to get it.

The fourth book in the "series" will be released later on this month, and knowing they will be released as the same edition as the other three, how could I say no.

I'll probably marathon these (obviously not in time before the fourth book is released), hopefully soon. I've only read book one, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, over a year ago, but never found the time to continue. Now that I have all three in paperback form, nothing is stopping me....well except for time and a new baby due soon. Minor details really.

#BookTubeAThon Wrap Up

Even though I didn't complete seven books, I think I did not bad overall.

I was kind of still in a readers slump so I didn't want to rush read anything and just take my time. Plus a lot of adult responsibility and a new baby coming soon, there wasn't a lot of time to read.

So without further ado I'll let you know what books I've read and what challenges I completed.

A Discovery Of Witches (All Souls, #1) - Deborah Harkness

Why is it that every book I pick up that contains a vampire, their main characteristic trait is over protectiveness of a female character, that it becomes borderline stalker/possessive?

I'm half way through, and even though this is the second time I'm reading it, I'm still annoyed by authors who think it's okay to cast your females love interest as an over bearing vampire. Who thinks because she is a woman she not only needs a man in her life to save her, but a strong vampire is just a bonus.

I mean, he's lived for hundreds of years, he has an abundance of life experience. Obviously not when it comes to the modern woman.

For once I would love to read a male vampire character who doesn't think that the female needs him 24/7, but instead actually ask her if she needs help. I'm sure she is more than capable on putting on her shoes....just saying.

At the moment Diana is showing her independent side, not letting Matthew take over her life. But like every other vampire novel I've read (except Dracula by Bram Stoker), it will probably all change soon and she'll be yet another weak female character.

Other than that, I'm actually enjoying the book. Being a history nerd this book is definitely up my alley.

The Best Songs for the Worst Literary Breakups

Reblogged from RedT Reads Randomly:

Breakups can be the pit stains on the t-shirt of life, this we know. But for each heartache and heartbreak, there’s always solace to be found in a song that captures exactly how it feels to be kicked in the emotions. It’s the song that you play on repeat, belt out at karaoke after too many drinks, and feel each individual lyric like it was the truest thing ever said about love. So whether it’s your first (thank you, Usher) or your latest (thank you, Gotye), a cathartic break-up song now and again does wonders for the bruised of heart.

So we had to wonder…what are the perfect break-up songs for some of the more iconic romantic tragedies in literature? What should Heathcliff listen to as he weeps into his half-gallon of Breyer’s Heath Bar Ice Cream? (Because really, what other ice cream flavor would Heathcliff buy?)

Catherine Earnshaw & Heathcliff - “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga

image

What can we say, the brooding orphan man knows how to hold a grudge. It takes serious dedication to exact a revenge as thorough as Heathcliff’s. And we think Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” with its themes of obsession and the dark side of love, is the perfect anthem to Catherine and Heathcliff’s tumultuous lifelong affair. You can almost hear Heathcliff sing-shouting, “I don’t want to be frieeeeeeeeends!” across the foggy moors.

Lyric That Nailed It

I want your love and
I want your revenge
I want your love
I don’t wanna be friends

Jay Gatsby & Daisy Buchanan - “F**k You” by Cee-Lo Green

image

Jay really could have used a dose of this song’s perspective when it came to trying to impress Daisy. Rather than spending all that money on parties and all that time staring at green lights, Jay could have just seen Tom and Daisy driving by and thought, “f**k that, old sport.”

Lyric That Nailed It

Now I know, that I had to borrow,
Beg and steal and lie and cheat.
Trying to keep ya, trying to please ya.
'Cause being in love with your a** ain't cheap.

Anna Karenina & Alexei Vronsky - “I Knew You Were Trouble” by Taylor Swift

image

Man, Anna Karenina could not get a break in Tolstoy’s (nearly) 350,000-word tome. But what can you expect when falling for someone who is totally flirting with someone else when you meet him? With “Trouble,” Taylor Swift knows a thing or two about falling in love when it’s clearly a bad idea. Plus, the line, “lying on the cold hard ground,” takes on a much more sinister meaning in Anna Karenina’s context.

Lyric That Nailed It

I knew you were trouble when you walked in
So shame on me now
Flew me to places I’d never been
Now I’m lying on the cold hard ground

Eponine Thenardier & Marius Pontmercy - “Dancing on My Own” by Robyn

image

I think we can all agree that Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” is the modern version of quintessential unrequited love ballad, “On My Own,” from the musical Les Miserables. Not only do they share similar titles, but both songs sum up what it feels like to be friend-zoned and overlooked. Girl, we’ve been there, we feel you.

Lyric That Nailed It

I’m in the corner, watching you kiss her
I’m giving it my all, but I’m not the girl you’re taking home
I keep dancing on my own

Lancelot & Guinevere - “9 Crimes” by Damien Rice

image

Forbidden love at its most medieval—not only do Lancelot and Guinevere betray their spouses, but in some interpretations of Arthurian legend, they kick off the downfall of Camelot. The heart-wrenching “9 Crimes” is well-suited for this guilt-laden duo. The haunting vocals by Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan, plus lots of slow piano and cello, makes for….WHY IS IT SUDDENLY RAINING ON MY FACE?

Lyric That Nailed It

Leave me out with the waste
This is not what I do
It’s the wrong kind of place
To be thinking of you
It’s the wrong time
For somebody new
It’s a small crime
And I’ve got no excuse

Medea & Jason - “You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morissette

image

Nobody does jilted, vengeful wife quite like Euripedes’ Medea. You can feel the fury and pain boil off her as she plots against former husband Jason, complete with cannibalism and poisoned diadems! And seeing as nobody has done a better “bitter ex” song since Alanis' “You Oughta Know,” we think Medea must have been vibing off that acrimonious energy.

Lyric That Nailed It

'Cause the joke that you laid in the bed
That was me, and I’m not going to fade as soon
As you close your eyes, and you know it
And every time I scratch my nails
Down someone else’s back, I hope you feel it
Well, can you feel it?!
